St. Mauritius

Prior to being demolished, the »Mauritiuskirche« was Cologne's oldest church, and had a uniformly vaulted basilica.

Milestones
1141	The church, built thanks to the donation of a citizen of Cologne, was consecrated
1830	Due to alleged dilapidation, the Romanesque church, »St. Mauritius« was demolished
1861-65	A new construction, based on the »Liebfrauenkirche« in Trier, replaced the church which was demolished

Today's building is one of the most interesting churches in the Rhineland. The tower crowned by a figure of St. Mauritius of the neo-Gothic church thus enthrals many who cast an eye over Cologne. Inside, the fork crucifix dating back to around 1415, and the cherubim on the flanking towers, works by Elmar Hillebrand, are particularly interesting.
