Museum Schnütgen / St. CäcilienThe medieval piece of culture, which provides visitors with an outstanding image of the major style periods, is located in the church »St. Cäcilien« at Neumarkt, including ecclesiastical art from the early Middle Ages to the Baroque era, ivory carvings, goldsmith´s work and wood sculptures.
Together with St. Peter's, St. Cäcilien - a Romanesque pillared basilica - formed the only example of a double-church complex in Cologne. Prior to the Second World War, both churches were linked together by a passageway; this has now been replaced by a wall with a Romanesque gate. St. Cäcilien's is worth seeing due to the Schütgen Museum inside. Thus in the church, the visitor will come across one of the most important collections of medieval church art. On the North facade a tympanum relief from about 1160 can be cherished. The Romanesque church offers an ideal atmosphere for architecture and exhibition pieces. Approximately 700 of the 13,000 exhibit collection, including sculptures, gold and ivory work. Presentations and regular concerts round off what the museum has to offer. ...more about Portray of all Cologne Museums
