HahnentorburgThe »Hahnentor Gate« on Rudolfplatz, a double turreted gate built in the 12th century, is one of the oldest and most conspciuous of Cologne's city gates.
This gate, »nova porta«, has a height of 8 metres and a width of 6 metres. Around 1880, the »Hahnentor« was excluded from demolition of the entire city fortifications, in order for it to remain as a piece of history from this period. In 1880, a historic museum was set up in the »Hahnentor«. Following the destruction during the Second World War, it was fully restored. The northern turret received a new form typical of the time. Later, the »Hahnentor« became an exhibition centre for young Cologne artists. |
