Castrum Divitium

Castrum Divitia

In 310 A.D., the »Castrum Divitia«, a military camp, was built under Emperor Constantine I which, by means of a bridge, was linked with »Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium«. It was later used by the Franconians as a royal court. The well-preserved foundations are to be found close to the Eastern arterial gate.

Opening hours: freely accessible
Remarks: next to Lufthansa Tower in Deutz

Built at the instigation of Emperor Konstantine by the 22nd legion, which was stationed along with the 1st and 30th legion as a protecting power. The soldiers were simultaneously policemen, building workers and bodyguards.

The arena – a square – was 141,35 metres long and had 14 towers and two gates. The East/West axis between both gates formed the so-called camp street. The West Gate opened onto the Rhine Bridge. 16 barracks stood parallel to the Rhine, with each second one oriented with a narrow side onto the middle street. Up to 1,000 people were accommodated in the camp.
