Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR)

In the heart of Cologne city centre, bordering existing buildings of West German Television (WDR), the WDR Arkaden were built on the piece of land between Tunisstrasse, Breite Strasse, Elstergasse, and Auf der Ruhr. From the plans of the Cologne architect, Gottfried Böhm, an imposing construction was created from a dreary car park, which sets an unusually attractive municipal construction highlight on the congested drive from North to South.

The building for production premises of radio and television of the largest German broadcasting corporation is an imposing, six-storey architectural highlight, the name of which goes back to the unique, arcade-like construction form of the façades.

The first approximately 350 employees of WDR moved into the WDR Arkaden in summer 1996. They work on the five upper floors of the office building, facing Cologne's Breite Straße above the row of shops on the ground floor, and the WDR central canteen on the 1st floor.
