The architectural competition opened up by Cardinal Höffner and his vicar-general, Norbert Feldhoff, was won by the Cologne architect Schilling. Based on his design, which was then subject to several changes by Peter Kulka, the junior partner, who was taken over in 1979, the Maternushaus was constructed at a cost of Euro 28.12 million.

Through the dense traffic from north to south journey, the house meets you with a cool, block-like façade. On Kardinal-Frings-Straße, the building opens itself up, and welcomes its visitors with a friendly, well-founded, and terrace-like construction which, when entering the foyer, allows itself to be once again recognised in the interior.

13 light flooded conference rooms, suitable for 5 to 500 people and equipped with the latest technology, as well as inviting inner court-yards and breaking
areas offer an incomparable atmosphere for conferences and meetings. The adjoining non-public restaurant offers besides the catering for conference guests a festive ambience for every kind of banquets. The hotel provides 63 well equipped guest rooms.
