IT & Communication
More than 11,000 IT and telecommunications companies are based here including the industry leader – Deutsche Telekom in Bonn. Cologne is also the German base of Germany’s biggest private bank and the centre of the modern insurance business. 34,500 commercial enterprises, including industry major names such as Rewe and Kaufhof, generate an annual turnover of around 16 billion euros.
The area of Cologne is one of the German centres for Information and communication technology with more than 7,800 companies.
Whilst the national market leader Deutsche Telekom and its subsidiaries reside only a few kilometres away up the Rhine in Bonn, the NetCologne regional carrier represents successful competition. Thanks to an early launching, it has become the largest regional telecommunications provider in Germany (and judging from awards from professional magazines also the best!).
On the other hand, Colognes IT companies are medium-sized companies in structure; the industry leaders of the classic computing systems are based traditionally in the south of the republic. However Cologne has experienced a whole series of successful foundations in recent years in terms of internet service providers, some of which in turn have been celebrating stock-market flotation since 1999.
